The area between Central Expressway and El Camino Real just off Shoreline Blvd could be a possibility. The home styles are mixed but Shoreline Blvd heads straight to the Google area and isn't overwhelmed with long distance commuters. You could walk to downtown Mountain View which is very enjoyable. California St in Mountain View has a lot of high density housing but there are single family homes behind many of the Apartments/Condominiums that are on California St.
Towards the north, the shopping center near San Antonio and California is going through a major re-build. Many/most of the homes on the "Palo Alto" side of San Antonio Rd (towards the SF Bay from Alma/Central) are Eichler homes, generally 3 or 4 bedrooms. Their rent would probably be out of your specified range but if you found a 2 bedroom it might be a very good match. San Antonio Rd would be an easy commute.
There are some small single story condominiums near the corner of Charleston and Middlefield Rd in Palo Alto which you could find appealing but they are seldom available.
Most of south Palo Alto has many Eichlers. There are a few 2 bedroom homes scattered throughout which might be in your rental range.
Downtown Mountain View near Castro St has quite a few newer townhomes and generally mixed older homes. Competition for rental housing near Google is getting quite intense.
