hello and thank you for your question. Waste Management will begin July 1 collecting residents’ trash and recyclables who are participating in the town’s preferred vendor. However, the percentage of residents participating in the program is lower than expected, at 53 percent, or 2,500 residents, according to Selectman Charles King. Although the percentage is not what the town expected, King said 800 people have not responded and the town has established a phone bank to try and get a decision from those residents. The town calculated the cost of the program on the basis that 70 percent participation. The final count will be tallied in October to decide how much the program will cost next year. If the final percentage is lower, the cost of the program could be higher. With 70 percent participation, the program will cost $65 a quarter, with one 64-gallon barrel and one 18-gallon recycling bin. Residents can purchase another barrel, which will cost residents $90 more a year than residents who have one barrel.
If residents occasionally have more trash than can fit in the barrels, separate town of Easton trash bags can be set out with the barrels, and they are available in packets of five for $15. They can be purchased at many stores around Easton. For a list of stores, check the Easton residents welcome packet that was sent to all participating households, or go to the town’s Web site at http://www.easton.ma.us.
Waste Management began distributing barrels June 25 and is scheduled to be finished June 30. If any residents do not receive their barrels June 30, they should call Waste Management at 800-972-4545. Trash pickup will be weekly and recycling biweekly; residents can find out what day of the week their trash will be collected by going to the town’s Web site or checking the welcome kit. The town launched the preferred vender program this spring after voters at 2006 special Town Meeting approved a plan to pursue a town-wide program.
