There are so many wonderful schools in Frederick County. One of the best ways to find out what would be the best school suited for your children would be for you to visit the website at http://greatschools.org/.
As a parent of 4 children myself I realize the importance of finding the right schools for your children.

The website has some very helpful information. You may also set up appointments with the principals of the schools that you are considering to visit and to take a tour, which can also be very helpful because you can ask one on one questions.

I hope that was helpful. If you have any further questions please feel free to contact me directly.

The best way to find out is to either click on the link below or to call the school board or the school bus transportation of Frederick County.

Neither public or private schools go year round, with the exception of summer sessions for remedial students. Mid June to late August would be the typical summer break.

Good morning, Joe,

In addition to the wealth of information you have already about public schools, three Frederick County private schools come to mind: Meadows Montessori, Friends Meeting School and The Lucy School. Each one is distinctive in its own way. These will give you options in addition to the excellent public schools in Montgomery and Frederick Counties as you consider what is best for your children. Options for before and after school care, if that is of interest to you, vary by school. Note that I have no affiliation with any of the schools.

First, besides test scores, teacher preparation and experience and parent ratings, a visit to any school you are considering, including a public school, is essential. Schedule with the principal, take your list of questions and ask to see representative classes that your child will be enrolled in. The Friends Meeting School has a good list of Tips for Choosing a School on its website.

Meadows Montessori is a newer school to Frederick and located at 185 Thomas Johnson Drive in Frederick. The school is having Parent Information Nights on Tuesday, October 26 and Thursday, October 28 from 7-8:30PM with child care provided. RSVP at 301.662.8910. Enrollment is open to infants through 5 years of age.

Friends Meeting School at 3232 Green Valley Road in Ijamsville, 301. 798.0288, is a Quaker school. Although we are not Quaker, my younger son attended a Quaker boarding school for high school, and we were very pleased with the Quaker approach.

The Lucy School offers an arts-based approach to education for pre-k through grade 3 students. The school is located at 9117 Frostown Road, Middletown, 301. 293.1163.

All three schools have websites: www.meadowscenter.com, www.friendsmeetingschool.org, and www.lucyschool.com .

Montgomery County also has Montessori and Friends Schools.

My wife, who is a retired educator, works with me in real estate. If we can be of assistance to you in locating your new home, please let us know. 240.529.0120 or petert@machomes.com.

Good luck in your search.

Hi Pam: I am very involved with our local schools in Marin County, CA for as long as my kids attended the schools.

The best way to make an influence about what the schools can and should do is to be more involved with the schools. Make an appointment with the school principal, the school counselor and discuss your concerns. You can also talk to the teachers of the subjects you are concerned about and ask them to provide either more homework or the reasons why hot and how you can help your niece and nephew with the problems you perceived.

What do your niece and nephew's parents say? Maybe they have already contacted the schools? If not and if they agree with your assessment, they should do the same also.

Best,
Sylvia Barry
