How can we find out if the home we rent is in forclosure if the landlord is not forth coming with that info? And do we still have to pay him the rent?

Asked by Alisa Shaw, Green Bay, WI Mon Sep 17, 2012

We moved into a rental home in WI at the end of July and days after we moved in a black lock box ended up on the door and the locks were changed on the front door. We are still living in the home. After several attempts at contacting the landlord he finally responded with he is working things out with the bank. A couple days after that we got a notice fron the water department that the water was going to be shut off due to a past due amount. I contacted the water department and then contacted the landlord. He said that half of that was from us. After i got upset and aaid it couldnt be he hung up. He text me back and said he would pay the bill by the due date and demanded more money for the rent. We told him no and he let the water get turned off. I have tried to contact him and have not gotten any respobse. i was able to call some people and get the water turned back on. He has lied to us several times and we believe he is lying about the forclosure to pocket the money. Please help.

Hi Alisa,

You need to contact an attorney and have all your rental/lease paperwork available.

As for continuing to pay the rent - if you are living there, you need to pay rent or you are trespassing/squatting which is illegal. If you don't want to pay the rent, you should move out.
