I am thinking about renting out my basement, but is this allowed in Newark? Would i have to change the designation of my single family home to a 2?

family? If i can rent my basement, what are the permits that I need to get? The last thing i want is the headache of a lawsuit or the building department giving me violations, it not worth the headache for a couple huindred bucks a month. I figured since I am not to far from the PATH and the colleges I could grab a student tenant.

You absolutely need to call the building department, and see what is required to legally rent out your space. At the very least, the basement would have to have some egress to the outside (a way of getting out through a window or a door, or both).
Call, and you will see if this is a possiblity.
