Harris Fedri…, Renter in New York, NY

Any suggestions on where to find a mature, responsible, clean, mentally stable, financially secure roommate to get share a $2k 2-bdrm apt with?

Asked by Harris Fedrick, New York, NY Mon Jan 21, 2013

The more people I meet from craigslist (7 so far) the more concerned I get. I'm not a student just a regular adult male recently divorced and paying child support so my funds are limited but I have a good job that I've been at for 22 years and I still have great credit in spite of 2 yrs in divorce court.

Hi Harris,

How are you? Hope things are going well with your roommate search. I see you asked this question last week so perhaps you found someone already. If you have not, please feel free to contact me because I'm currently working with a client who needs an apartment but can't afford the rent for a nice one bedroom on her own. She is mature, has good credit, secure job, etc... She's open to sharing a 2 bedroom with a roommate to save money so I'd be glad to introduce the two of you so you can see if it's a good fit.

Looking forward,

Have you looked into Roommate Happy Hour? I've had a few clients who had great success using that website.

Ask people you may know the question; or consider a less expensive rental...

A good question to be sure. At first, I thought a Sheldonian "Roommate Agreement" might suffice. But then again, how do you ever really know if a roommate is going to be all of the above and hopefully more? The responsible part goes hand in hand with being financially secure as a share situation depends on each coming up with the 'ole Dough Re Mi every month.

We in the business concentrate on finances and credit history as the best barometer of a renter. Yea sure, mature, clean, mentally blah blah blah. You're getting a taste of what we are faced with every day. I gotta say at first reading, your question made me smile.

But seriously folks, get yourself a broker who will cut through the mire and get to someone that you can literally live with. Good luck.

Hi Harris. Beware of craigslist. I think that you should consult a Realtor. A Realtor can pre-screen candidates, including background checks, credit checks, etc. Though the service is not free, it may be a viable option that will save you a lot of time, money, stress and headaches down the road.

I hope this answered your question! If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact me by the ways below.

Wishing you all the best,

We sell and/or rent real estate. Maybe you need to look for something cheaper until you can get on your feet. All the best.
