A credit report alone is not sufficient for screening a tenant. Period.
The applicant’s income, in addition to eviction and criminal history are very important when considering a potential applicant and none of these are found in a credit report. No tenant screening process will be 100% effective. But a comprehensive background search can significantly reduce the number of problem tenants.
The tenant screening program I use to avoid problematic tenants is TenantMagic.
They are free to use, provide great customer service, and are unbelievably easy.

I have rental properties in California as well as in Schaumburg. Here is the web site that I use to perform Credit and back ground checks: It's pretty straight forward and only cost $34 to do a Credit, Criminal, and Evection background check.
Although I require these checks from all rental prospects I do call the prior landlords and confirm employment and pay range with the prospects employer.(Most companies will not tell you over the phone what the employee makes but will confirm a pay range..i.e $50-60k a year).

Good luck!

Most companies who do tenant screening will do credit checks. is good. Another good company to use is They are BBB certified, fast and easy.
They will run the possible tenant's through the check. They also do criminal record checks and so on.

The website does tenants' screening for you. First you need to list a home with this service. And when renters apply for your property, you will see their credit reports and scores.

Most screening companies require a certification process (required by FCRA) in order to verify you are qualified to receive credit information. Additionally, you often have to pay fees to use the services. is an applicant initiated tenant screening report that allows landlords access to completely comprehensive tenant screening reports for FREE - no paperwork, no inspections, no hidden fees.

Go to, create your free landlord account and begin inviting applicants to apply right away. Applicants verify their identity, order and pay for tenant screening report and share with you through secure sharing platform.

Comprehensive reports include: credit report & credit score, criminal & eviction searches (aliases too!), rental & employment verifications.

Wishing you continued success!
