From my rental property 12728 Dogwood Hills Lane, the corner of RT 286 and RT 50 (King of King Church) and depending on the time of day and the mode, it can take between 12 to 30 minutes. On route 50 there are public express buses which go directly to the metro if the silver or orange line. Driving if by car pool you have the HOV for two passengers plus lane on 66, free on the 495 EZPASS. Back roads WILL be less congested. To DC on off traffic hours it can take 30 minutes to get to the Lincoln Memorial. ... more

It would take you so long to get there on a bus you should just drive unless you don't have a car. In that case move closer to where you work. There is very good public transportation in Alexandria Virginia and the bus stops are close together with a variety of bus services available. REX is the express bus to the metro. Perhaps you could ride the metro from Rockville to Huntington Station (South Alexandria) and then ride the FFX county connecter, REX bus down Route 1 to Fort Belvoir. That wouldn't be too bad. ... more

Hi Daniel,

The commute is about 20 miles depending on traffic. But if you take the Springfield Metro it would take you straight to the Pentagon. If you plan on coming here for a trial run you can map out and see the difference. Should you have any questions, please call me. Thanks! ... more

There is excellent public transportation to and from Fort Belvoir to either the Huntington (closest) or the Springfield metro stations. Watch for a REX bus...a yellow and blue express bus on Richmond Highway that makes fewer stops and takes you to the Huntington Metro. ... more

A lot of good advice from Mark. I even learned a few things!

I don't know if Ft. Belvoir has any sort of shuttle to D.C. You should look into that as well.

Regarding sightseeing, Mark mentioned Old Town Alexandria. That is fun, and there are a lot of historical sites (Masonic Temple, Gadsby's Tavern, etc.) mixed in. There's a lot of other good sightseeing in Northern Virginia as well: historic towns (Occoquan, Clifton), Civil War sites (Manassas, and many towns and cities further south), sites like Mount Vernon, and more.

Good luck!
