I do not now if you have resolved your commuting issue but here goes. I commuted for several years
from Flushing (bus and #7) and commuted 15 years from Millburn and there was basically no difference in time. In fact, the wear and tear on the body is a little easier from NJ because of the one stop nature, depending of course on what you need to do once you get to NYC. I would recommend that you buy in Millburn because renting is not a low-cost situation, moving can be expensive and the commute is not that different from Brooklyn (unless you only have to go 3-4 stops) to wall street.
The market now in 2014 is likely to pop again next month so I would approach it aggressively. Naturally, I would be happy to help you do it and also show you other towns that have similar commutes, schools that are close to that of Millburn and costs that are more attractive. Given the crap tastic home market right now, you might find it financially advantageous to buy instead of rent. Things are very much in favor of the buyer but the market is just starting to turn and should be, IMHO, fairly recovered in 2 years when you'd be ready to sell. Just something to consider.... more
