Are you talking about Forest Hills NY or Newark?

In Newark Forest Hill section taxes are higher than the rest of Newark. $6k to $15k is reasonable depending on the size of the lot and the home. ... more

I agree. There's not too many clubs anymore in East Orange. Years ago (4+ ?) the city used to have several clubs. But the city used various means to discourage them and so you'll find a lot more in Newark and Elizabeth.

There's 'The Lodge' on Central Ave. in Newark, 'Atmosphere' on Wainwright and Nye in Newark, 'Loft 47' on Edison Pl. in downtown Newark, clubs 'Sho' and 'Dolces' in Elizabeth and 'Four Sixty Six' on Prospect Ave. in West Orange (right off of Rt. 280).

Hope this helps.

Gene Tedesco answered:
Assessed values also do not reflect what a buyer is going to pay for a home. It is what the town values the house at for tax purposes. You could be assessed $350,000 but if its close to someones mother and nicely updated they could be willing to pay $375,000 for it.

Appraisals, assessed values, and market value are all different.

You are also allowed to appeal your taxes usually in the beginning of each year sometimes it can get your taxes reduced but if they just reassessed the whole town then its highly unlikely they would change anything this year.

That is unfortunately the nature of buying new construction. Taxes are based upon your town's assessment value of your property, not upon the neighboring conditions of your property. Hopefully, your inconvenience will be short-lived.

Enjoy your new home!

Landlords want to rent to tenants who will reliably pay the rent. That is why they ask for a credit report.

Debra (Debbie) Rose answered:
Right now, the majority of rentals in W. Orange in the 1000-2300 range are condos,NOTsingle family houses.

There is a 2 BR, 1 bth home listed at $1200 and then the next single family home listed is a 4 br/1bth at 63 Valley St., listed at 1800.
Currently, there are no 3 bedroom, 2bth homes listed in that range - even looking up to $2300.

The demand for rentals all over is quite strong now.

Good luck!

Ibrahim Hughes answered:
Hi again Ms. Walker:

(I’m on my PC now and see that you’re looking to buy in East Orange) - You’ve already received some useful sites on schools, recreation centers, libraries, etc. for the city of East Orange. I just want to add some personal insight on the city and its “family friendliness”.

East Orange, generally speaking is a safer city than it was a decade ago and has experienced a decline in crime over the last several years (down 76% in 6 years). I currently own property in the city, grew up in one of its neighboring cities (Newark – on the side that borders east orange) and have two family members who are long time police officers there.

Having said that, like other cities in the surrounding area (Newark, Irvington and Orange) East Orange is sort of (what I call) a ‘hit and miss’ city in regards to family friendly neighborhoods. There are fewer areas in the southern part of East Orange (that make up the 07018 and 07019 area codes) that one might find “desirable” enough to raise a family (in my opinion) versus the Northern end bordering Bloomfield and Glen Ridge (which make up the 07017 area code).

A quick word on the schools: the new high school, Cicely Tyson, is good for children with artistic talent. However, the general school is East Orange Campus High and I wouldn’t necessarily give it high marks.

In short East Orange is not a town like West Orange or Maplewood where virtually the whole town might be considered ‘family friendly’. East Orange has some good areas and some not-so-good areas. Again, let me know if I can be of assistance in helping you choose a home in the right neighborhood. The best of luck to you in finding your home and Happy New Year!

Hi Namw,

You neglected to give the whole address, so we can't help you. But use Google maps to bring up your subject. Then use the following link for this nifty little distance calculator: http://www.daftlogic.com/projects-google-maps-distance-calculator.htm
Pinpoint your subject by clicking on the map. Then pinpoint the ocean and click on the nearest watermark. And presto.....you'll have your distance and quite accurately as well.

Good luck,
