Personally, my favorite Mexican food in Austin are the following: Polvos (two locations), Chuys (more tex-mex - I recommend the New Mexican Martini), and Matt's El Rancho. These are mostly tex-mex but they are popular for a reason!

Try Polvos. I have yet to find really good Mexican. There is plenty of TEX MEX to go around though.

This is a tough question. Having lived in Mexico and in the Southwest i've yet to find a real liking to "Tex-Mex". I've lived here 5 years now and still trying to like queso, lol. Some of my favorites though are La Condesa for true Mexican food. Taco Deli for really good unique tacos. Taco More for cheap, quick and amazing real mexican food, though they do serve queso.

Fonda San Miguel is my favorite, but it is pricy. On the southside I like Matt's or El Meson. Northside (Cedar Park/Round Rock) I like Chuys and/or Dos Salsas.

In Austin, Mexican food and BBQ are hard to nail down "the best". Everyone has their favorite and in the end they are all pretty good.

As other people have mentioned, Fonda San Miguel has some great food and ambiance, but they are pricey. Casa Chapala is very good too and their prices are more reasonable.
They have a more traditional interior Mexican cuisine rather than "tex-mex", and have a downtown location and north location. I really like their avocado margarita and their queso fundido.

I've found that people have widely varying opinions about Mexican food, so what one person likes, another may not. The little places that have popped up all over town, La Tapatia, are a very good value with copious proportions, even with meat. Chuy's is excellent, with a nicer environment than La Tapatia but more expensive. Best view/best place for a group: Iguana Grill in Lakeway (overlooking Lake Travis). There are a number of nicer places: La Fonda San Miguel, Manuel's, Iron Cactus, but you are paying for service and ambiance as much as the food. There are also single neighborhoods Mexican restaurants all over town, as well as a lot of restaurants that serve TexMex dishes. I think you can go for years without going to any place twice!

I've tried some good ones but forgotten the names. I would check out yelp.

My first choice is Fonda San Miguel, hands down #1.
La Condesa is probably number #2 (but they are kinda pricy and parking is a NIGHTMARE!!)
and Maudie's & Chuy's are tied for #3. But honestly I go to Chuy's and Maudies most often.

Here's my vote:

1. Interior Cuisine: Fonda San Miguel's or Manuel's

2. Tex- Mex: La Tapatia or Matt's El Rancho BUT never count out Chuy's.

I agree with Ron, but would like to add another - different kind of Mexican food in Austin...Hula Hut, Mexican Hawaiian fusion...it's awesome!

There are many varieties in Mexican cuisine, so your question is relative (as are all the questions asked by Trulia.) If you want interior Mexican then go to Fonda San Migue or Manuel'sl. If you want classic Tex-Mex, then there are dozens of excellent restaurants serving that, Chuy's, Tres Amigos, Matt's El Rancho, Iron Cactus ... and the list goes on and on. BTW, this is good news, because Mexican cuisine is one of my two favorites.
