with a lot of art and counter-culture. We've thought of Portland, Seattle, Oakland/Berkeley, Brooklyn, the usual places. Should we move to nola?

I'm a lifelong West-Coaster, and love our temperate seasons. All the suggestions thusfar are good... but for my good times, if the West Coast fell into the ocean, I'd move to Austin Tx in a NY minute!
Great food! Great music! Most liberal town in Texas!

I am a transplant from Atlanta to Baltimore and have really enjoyed what the city has to offer. Check out LiveBaltimore's neighborhood list (link below) for specifics on areas, like Charles Village, Mt. Vernon, Canton, Fells Point, etc.

Minneapolis would be a great place to move, as long as you enjoy (or can bear with) the four full-fledged seasons here. I hear we're second only to SF with the amount of live music on any given night (First Avenue/7th Street Entry of Prince/Purple Rain fame and http://www.triplerocksocialclub.com are a few clubs to check out). We have thriving theater and art scenes, both DIY and "pro" http://(www.artsmia.org and http://www.walkerart.org). And we have several bicycle gangs, Vespa clubs, counter culture events like the May Day parade, and on and on. Best of all...we've managed to hold back the Starbucks tide with zillions of well-supported indie coffee shops. Look me up if you ever visit.

Oh, and http://www.mnartists.org/ is a good site to check out our art scene.

I can't make out what you guys like to do with your nights.. but S.F. is my hometown and they don't judge folks for funny use of symbols that middle aged Realtors can't understand. :) Happy Landing!
