Best neighborhood for a foodie?

Asked by Brandi, Chicago, IL Thu May 10, 2007

I'm moving to the city soon so I haven't really explored the areas. Which neighborhoods have the best restaurants? I have friends who tell me to move to Lincoln Park, but I was driving through the West Loop and saw great restaurants on Randolph Street. Now I'm more confused than ever.

Chicago is a food lover's town - every neighborhood has great restaurants. You'll find the super trendy places in Bucktown / Wickerpark. The downtown area has some great restaurants as well, though many can be very touristy. The west-loop is an up and coming area with many newer restaurants too. A great place to find restaurants and read reviews is

Good luck!

Hard to answer your question without knowing what your price range is for renting or buying.

That said, is a terrific source of information on Chicago restaurants. Good reviews from avid reviewers. It's searchable by neighborhood, so you can browse around the areas and get a feel for what's available that way.

Bucktown/Wicker Park is the place to be for selection and atmosphere. Many great restaurant locations such as Randolph street only come alive in the evenings and weekends and tend to be quiet during the day. Downtown and the surrounding neighborhoods are easy to get to so no matter where you decide to settle, you'll always be near great restaurants with a little travel time included.

I also recommend Bucktown/Wicker Park, I live there and I can vouch for all those restaurants. And it seems like there are more and more coming up.

Take it from a guy who eats everywhere, this is an impossible question to answer. Check out Clark St in Andersonville (5200 N +/- a few blocks), Lincoln Ave in Lincoln Square (4600 N +/-), Randolph in the West Loop (1000 W +/0, Argyle in Uptown (800 W ?), Devon farther north for Indian (2400 W +), and 6000 (+/-) Broadway for all kinds of stuff.
