I was born, raised and lived in Oakland for 47 years. We moved to El Sobrante because we found a beautiful house on a quiet country road where our neighbors have horses and we have a creek that runs through our back yard. All for about half what a house in the Oakland hills would cost. We left Oakland kind of kicking and screaming and now after 2 years we laugh that we thought we'd miss living in Oakland. The wild life, weather, rural atmosphere, friendly people, great parks, less crowds etc all provide a huge quality of life that honestly doesnt exist in Oakland. We want to eat at Pizzaiolo or Lukas we drive 20 minutes (not much longer than Oakland hills) and we're there. I can hear the chirp of a redtailed hawk as I'm typing this (daily occurance). 10 minute drive from our house near the reservoir to Orinda BART and 25 minute BART ride and we're in downtown SF in less than 45 during commute time. The longer I love in El Sobrante the more I love it. I would say El Sobrante is one of the great hidden gems of the Bay area. And given the cost of housing throughout Northern California it is a complete steal to live in such a beautiful area compared to other much more suburban type areas.
