You've been fairly thouroughly answered, but let me add a few things of relevance. Old West Durham is mostly what we call a walkable neighborhood. You can walk to grocery stores and ice cream shops and parks... Its very charming and has been a wise investment to its residents for quite some time. There is a diversity of home sizes and styles and an appreciation for gardening and color! I sell quite a few homes in OWD becasue our firm is located one block from there in Watts Hillandale. Its also one of the top neighborhoods that my buyer clients ask for. The neighborhood has one of the most active listserves in Durham and a wonderful and welcoming community spirit. ... more

Chapel Hill & Carrboro are completely out of the question. I don't even know why someone brought them up. You're looing at at least 200k for Chapel Hill and you won't even be in town limits.

$100 k is still small for the safe parts of Durham, and probably Raleigh as well. $150k will definitely find you a good place, and you could probably find something in the $115-150k range.

I will be selling my house soon. It is in the 27713 zip code (the better part of Durham) and will be listing it around $135k.
