You've been fairly thouroughly answered, but let me add a few things of relevance. Old West Durham is mostly what we call a walkable neighborhood. You can walk to grocery stores and ice cream shops and parks... Its very charming and has been a wise investment to its residents for quite some time. There is a diversity of home sizes and styles and an appreciation for gardening and color! I sell quite a few homes in OWD becasue our firm is located one block from there in Watts Hillandale. Its also one of the top neighborhoods that my buyer clients ask for. The neighborhood has one of the most active listserves in Durham and a wonderful and welcoming community spirit.
