The spring and fall especially are quite humid here. Summer is variable, but seems to get more humid with each passing year. It does not generally get very hot, but at night when it might be in the 50's, the air will be very damp.

It's a nice area. I'd call it semi-rural now, as the farms are mostly gone and subdivided.

If the outdoor humidity is a problem for you, you might not like it so much. But again, because it doesn't get nearly as hot as down NYC area, a small air conditioner in your home (I use a 5000 btu downstairs for about 750 sq.ft. ) will do you. In the spring and fall, the humidity can be a blessing because you can either warm your home with a dehumidifier or use a heat pump and get extra efficiency from it. When the temps here are in the 35-45 range, I can often heat my whole house with a small dehumidifier, cheaply. If you google "heat house with dehumidifier" you will find articles that show how you can get cheap electric heat when the humidity is over about 45% and it's not winter-cold out.

Be ready for some cold winters. Last winter, we were below zero about 30-35 nights. Almost as many this winter, but I think we got down to the -10 range a few more times this year.

I escaped the SW CT "gold coast" in 2009 and I love it here. Could do with a little less summer heat and a little less winter cold, but it's hard to find that without doing the snowbird thing.

If you buy a home here, try to buy some land with it. Small acreage is not a good thing around here, for a lot of reasons. Of course, if you want to live in town, that's another matter.

Be aware, too, the the politics of the area isn't conducive to people who like peace and quiet. There are huge pushes for ever more development in the area, and if you don't want development around you, you are going to be a bit of a social pariah, lol.

It's true, no swimming, and no playing with the dog in the water...however, here is the good news. If that is your pleasure, just down the road from the Shavertown Bridge, in the direction of Lew Beach, is Big Pond, a free, public lake where you can swim, fish, and play with your dog to your hearts' content. Also has great hiking trails. Then, just a little further down the road, another great water sport location, Alder Lake, once the private home of the Coykendall Lodge--nice swimming, boating, and dog friendly grassy beach setting (also check out the Lodge ruins). Again, marked hiking trails that let you walk for hundreds of miles if you so desire! ... more

Outstanding hiking, biking, golf and skiing can all be enjoyed within the township. But.... it also is the perfect place for folks who enjoying the simple pleasure of sitting on a porch and watching the world go by : )

There are many nice reasons to enjoy Roxbury Run. Of course you know about the pool, tennis courts etc.... but think about this... how nice is it to not have to shovel out your car and plow the driveway!!

Those are all great towns and they really comprise one overall community where people get to know each other and have dinner parties etc. Most places are about 20 minutes drive apart and Margaretville serves as a hub because of the good Freshtown Supermarket and other shopping and events there.
Andes has great boutiques and the Andes Hotel and some cafes and galleries. Roxbury is having a resurgence with the super cool Roxbury Motel, Orphic Gallery and Newstand and cafes and The Public restaurant and a beautiful park and small golf course built by the Gould family tycoons. The town of Stamford is next to Roxbury and Bovina and is also a great area for a second home with the Book Village Hobart and the great Bibliobarn bookshop ban on Roses Brook Road.
