You and your girlfriend need to talk to a bank and get pre-approved so that you know how much they will lend to you. Then contact a local realtor to start looking for homes in that price range. ... more

You can buy a house and land dirt cheap here if you are used to high big city prices. Three bedroom, two bath on a big lot for under 100,000. It is a nice town. Not a lot of shopping. Very easy and cheap to live here, except check house insurance rates before you buy house. ... more

This is a good place to buy. We have many lakes and they have one acre lots for 25,000. If you were just in the mood for a lot in the country you could probably find one for 5,000. But, most people would end up buying three to five acres for 20,000 and adding a well and septic. They are putting in a four land road from the interstate to the beach at this time. It is a good time to invest. The time to the beach will drop from 40 minutes to 20 minutes. ... more

Defuniak Springs is a small town, but lacks much public transportation. You need a car. Try Niceville, Florida.

DeFuniak Springs is a very nice place to live. Not too many condo's here. Just a quiet country town right off of interstate 10. Great quiet slow pace of life. Good for old people who do not want to deal with the trials of snow and city life. We have a hospital. Will probably need to have someone in the family that drives. Most everything within 15 minutes. Nice beautiful pond is the center of town. We have a very old fashioned 4th of July picnic and fireworks show in the middle of town around the lake. The price range you mentioned will buy you a house here. The beach is also within 40 minutes. ... more

Hi Stacy!

I think your instincts are right! :) DeFuniak Springs is a special place to live.

I was born and raised in DeFuniak and after college at FSU, returned to my hometown to work in real estate. That was 15 years ago and "charming" is one of the best adjectives I know to describe DeFuniak.

And Tammy is right - the crime rate in our area is particularly low. There's a great website that should give you insight to the crime rate not just in DeFuniak Springs, but anywhere you're considering living. The information is provided by the Walton County Sheriff's Dept and it's called https://www.crimereports.com/. You can search back up to 6 months and see the number of crimes, locations, as well as the type of crime.

Hope this is helpful...just write back or call if you'd like the scoop on anything else DeFuniak Springs related!

Best Regards,
