My child went to Smith Elementary in Kindergarten we moved and now go to Gentry Elementary which is on the other side of Smith both schools feed into the middle school and Horn High school. Smith Elementary is a great school! I was part of the PTA there and loved popcorn Fridays..every friday kids can bring 25 cents for a bag of fresh popped popcorn. Many teachers will use this as an incentive for good behavior and buy popcorn for those students. The school staff is very nice and understanding. They welcome parent involvement in all aspects. 100% open door policy. The only downfall I would say is the traffic of picking up after school. Many times you will need to park on the street which poses a safety issue and there is a daycare across the street which I have had issues with many times they will stand outside and yell at parents for using their parking lot or using it as a drive thru to park on the side. Many folks just walk their kids to and from school. We used to live on Arapaho Trail and it was only 3-4 long blocks away and there is a crossing guard to help cross Mesquite Valley Rd. I think you guys will love Smith it is a great school..growing and expanding. Welcome to the neighborhood! :-)... more
I have been working in the DeSoto area for over 6 years, and I consider it to be very safe. Employment is good. DeSoto continues to grow and we have great neighboring growing cities such as Cedar Hill, Duncanville, Midlothian, Read Oak, Waxahachie. I feel that DeSoto is a great place to live, it offers easy commute to the DFW metroplex. Please call me if I can be of assistance in helping you find a home.... more

Applications for the magnet schools are due in the spring of the previous school year and notifications are made in May/June. Just because you live in the area would not necessarily mean that your child(ren) would get to attend the school. Hope this helps.... more
