Hello, Was asked to look at a reasonable home for sale and to do a contractors estimate. In doing so I find a strangeness of the area, yes it was dark and water was still on the streets from recent storm. As I looked around I saw alot of very positive things and of course even some of concern. I did not see many street lights, activities were limited. It seemed to be a town lost in time, as I understand it and it was simple to see, a slow place. This is a place were water plays the most important role and most things revolve around it,. It had so little of a downtown and did not look to be of a place were you would just walk the dog around, quite the opposit. I did not see any central features / parks in center or real lively life, or even park benches to sit upon but a very quite town. Maybe all were in fear, it did have that stillness little was moving about. The shops and stores were low lit or subdued, not much going on some were boarded up a few were open most of downtown main was like empty shells, worn by time and now semi used. Alot of the commercial downtown was like a 60s re-development gone wrong, it had lots empty and torn down structures unimproved apon.grass plots and for rent signs. It lacked that big crab and fish sculpture that would easyly introduce you to the towns inner area perhaps it in the works or I just missed it? As I drove around the town it was a very nice town with very nice propertys alot of historical details and signs the people were spending alot of money on property. Those historical features were the best part of the town yet it looked as if people were trying to sell alot on the market, for sale signs were everware,? I figured that not much to stay for or that this is a good place to get a good deal. Thats for sure $ and property aplenty but why? I figuring its just a town far away from the strip malls and home depo and well steeped into history of CRAB TOWN. Afterall it is far on the tip of the eastern shore and deep into these times has little to offer a person looking for work unless water related. Word has it that a real need for those who struggle is jobs and this is a problem in CHRISTFEILD, alot of propertys are summer or used for related to water and no real industry existed ,big stores, factories, employers and so on. I was also told by a past resident unless you are able to drive far for work, have money, or be in the right places that you will have alot of problems some of these also are crime concerns? Shocked I asked him why he felt so, and he got right into the areas not to go into. Yes we all suffer from this kind of concern, drugs, crime, color, even lack of basic acceptance by all others. As he put it, I lived there for 2 yrs and have a son schools are getting effected, different types of people are moving into certain areas, and crimes are getting more so, and he gave examples. All this stands to reason because when you have an area were little is offered you end up with the residue, destressed areas were rents are cheeper, houses are lesser qualitys and upkeep is always forgotten, landlords get little for returns on investment and theirfor do less to keep it going. Yea a real concern but remember this town is at the point end of Md line yet its best thing is the water/ its people/ the old ways and perhaps they don't want change. One of the most important facts easy to see that effects the area was the storm damages that effected all things. The water system was compromised and the people who live within had to find a way to offset the h2o problem. Many resorted to adding filter systems to the houses and or container water . I was told the water was bad/ perhaps the state should have given thought to this health concern and the people who were effected? Alot of the propertys are on flat land easy filled by rain and or major storms as in case of SANDY. Another example is easy to see; FORCLOSURES and they are plenty to view always. This tells a story alone just by the large numbers of propertys forclosed and now for sale, as well look at the sale of those that are on the market for lenthy times. As an outsider who looks at the big picture more things are greater than the crime , yes it exists, but bigger things effect the quality of an area, We went away to do more thinking of investment dollars and brainstormed some ideas as to what it needed to perhaps turn this lovely town into anew with simplest ways. Yes crime always a big factor, commercial grouth, newness of city govermental actions- even a large grant to build a better water system improvement of signage street lights downtown improvement projects and so on stepping up of gov- and citizen groups co-ops with and so on. They did have a good idea on the wind generator/ but need more than one so they could sell extra power to others for profits that will add to city long term needs. If crime is a issue let the people form a citizen watch ! ... more
