Although asking the local police can be a good idea, asking the neighbors may be a better one. I asked a local cop about this and that is what he suggested.

For sites look at

John I always have my clients call the local police. They normally have a person that can talk to people and let them know not just the crime rate for an area but more detailed information about the area. I had a client that purchase a home in an area that hjad a crime rate that alarmed him. He had used a website to find out the statistics for the area. I had already recommended that he call the local liasion officer. He called after I asked him again. The police departmet let him know that the numbers were right for the district but the district also included a 200 unit apartment complex where 90% of the reported crimes occured at. Sometimes you neeed to know the source of the data not just the results.
