Its an inner city neighborhood. I live in the "low" crime area near victory memorial parkway and my car has been broken into 3 times and my girlfriends car was broken into twice. If you want completely safe, move out of the city. City lifestyle comes with its baggage. Something we have to live with. Vote for a politician with a larger more aggressive police presence policy, figure out a way to deal with it on your own, or live far enough outside Minneapolis. As far as personal safety, I recommend buying a gun and taking some courses on how and when to use it properly and effectively. Don't be the victim.

Definitely look into the area before buying. Look into the police records. Try to hang around at night, especially weekend, by taking a walk around, talk to neighbors, make eye contact. Check for a Sex Offender site as well. You can also find records that indicate how many rentals there are in an area. This gives you a feeling for pride of home ownership. Definitely walking around and looking closely at how the yards are kept, any trash, too many cars on the street, all indicators of a type of neighborhood you may or may not want to live in.

Speak with some of the neighbors - an excellent source for local information!
Here's a great site for more detailed info too:

We lived at 43rd and Grand Ave S for the past 7 years and it has been extremely safe and quiet neighborhood! Very friendly! You can walk to almost anything you want and catch the bus right on Grand to head downtown.

This area is street to street. Meaning some blocks have nice looking homes and signs of home ownership pride, but some blocks are ugly.

Have you teamed up with an agent to help you find "the one" yet?

I would be happy to meet with you and discuss the process when you have time.

Have a good night.

No it is not. I lived there for 4 months and 7 people were shot in that time. Check Trulia crime map overlay and drive by at different times of the day. Don't go asking random neighbors.

I recommend you speak directly with the folks who live on the block your concerned with. For a broader neighborhood perspective, I suggest the following:

Barry gives good advice, Minneapolis publishes crime watch information. This neighborhood has a wonderful old homes but has had some struggles compared to the rest of the city. That said, Minneapolis is a great city to live in with great amenities.

Check your local paper, police department, or favorite online resources, such as:

Talk to the folks living in the neighborhood(s) of your liking. Good luck!
