Why is the crime rate so much higher near the park? This doesn't seem like a safe neighbor hood at all, is it?

Hello, I understand you're concerned about the crime rate near the Park. This is what i would do, I would visit the area on the weekend and ask the locals. Some crimes go on without reported, you will have a better idea and then you'll make up your mind.
If you have any questions about anything and i could be at help, please feel free to call.

Here's a site that will help compare zip codes... http://www.clrsearch.com/Brooklyn_Demographics/NY/11230/Crim…
Just switch the zips for the ones your looking for.
The park is pretty up and coming, as tough as some portions are looks like some are changing.
Let me know if you need more help!

Betsywise,
I wouldn't say the crime rate is "so much higher near the park" as there are a number of different neighborhoods that border Prospect Park including Park Slope, Windsor Terrace, Prospect Park South, Prospect Heights and Prospect Lefferts Gardens. The house you are referring to is in Prospect Lefferts Gardens. I would suggest you consult the local precinct for crime stats as well as for the other neighborhoods that border the park. As far as if it is a "safe neighborhood," again the precinct can tell you that information and you can judge for yourself based upon your own personal standard of what is "safe."
