Crime in Western Addition needs to considered on a block by block basis. On http://www.trulia.com/crime,
the crime in WA is concentrated in a two areas, both of which are close public housing projects. After living in Hayes Valley, and now in Cathedral Hill, I can say that I am not deterred by what the map shows. I guess it just depends on the individual's tolerance-level. SF has housing projects scattered all over, so you're never going to be too far from one. If you are interested in renting or buying in WA, be sure to check the crime map, and the neighborhood during the day and at night to see how it feels. For me, the price, features, and location criteria weighed more heavily than proximity to a housing project in my decision to buy in WA.
