Definatly agree with Matthew. Check with the neighbors. Also go and talk with the police department. Probably the best way to research crime in the area

West Portal now is the most dangerous place for people to live in. Crazy drivers never stop for people to walk. Almost all of the kids that live there are extremely more disrespectful than other kids I know. Let's just say that I felt innocent until I moved to that area.

When it comes to any safety/crime related issues, it's always best to contact the local police department with all your questions, hear all there is to hear firsthand. If unfamiliar with the area(s) do revisit more than once and at different times of day, possibly chat with locals/neighbors. Real estate professionals are prohibited from steering, enticing a buyer to purchase, or not, in specific neighborhoods.

I recommend that you take the time to introduce yourself to some of the neighbors in the area and let them know you're considering the purchase of a home in the neighborhood. Ask them what their thoughts are about the area. Drive through the neighborhood once in the morning, afternnon and evening to get a feel for the area. You may also contact the local Police Department to inquire as to the types of calls that frequent the area. I hope this helps and good luck!

This neighborhood is extremely safe. There are a couple of panhandlers that commute to West Portal, but they are not aggressive. The merchants know their customers, and are more than happy to help those who frequent their businesses. The biggest problem is the vehicles in the area, who do not always follow the rules of the road (what else is new?). It is a family oriented area, with a true neighborhood feel.
