When it comes to any safety/crime related issues, it's always best to contact the local police department with all your questions, hear all there is to hear firsthand. If unfamiliar with the area(s) do revisit more than once and at different times of day, possibly chat with locals/neighbors. Real estate professionals are prohibited from steering, enticing a buyer to purchase, or not, in specific neighborhoods.

According to Trulia's stats from http://www.trulia.com/real_estate/San_Francisco-California/crime/ and based on my own subjective impression, the crime rate in the Inner Richmond is pretty low compared to many areas of the city. Looks like there are some pockets that have more crime activity -- particularly around 6th and Geary.

I frequently see a number of homeless people around Golden Gate Park and 7th Avenue, near the Safeway, but I couldn't say they committing crime or are a safety danger.
