Our home was broken into a couple of months ago so I feel pretty good about answering your question! It happened between 10AM and 1PM, a time we are normally away from the house. Our neighborhood officer said it's a common theme, as the bad guys are paying attention to your normal patterns. He gave us two suggestions:
1) Be a "nosy neighbor". Be aware of when your neighbors are away from their home and tell them when you will be away from yours. Let them know about repairmen that are expected at your home. Be aware of your surroundings and others.
2) Our officer could not stress this point enough... If you have a bad feeling about a person or a car in your neighborhood, call 911! That's what they are there for. The 911 operator will dispatch your neighborhood officer directly.
It was clear our officer took all break-ins personally. They are doing their best, but they need our help.
I hope this helps!
