When it comes to any safety/crime related issues, it's always best to contact the local police department with all your questions, hear all there is to hear firsthand. If unfamiliar with the area(s) do revisit more than once and at different times of day, possibly chat with locals/neighbors. Real estate professionals are prohibited from steering, enticing a buyer to purchase/rent, or not, in specific neighborhoods.

If you're interested in Boston you should consult directly with law enforcement in the city of Boston. They can review crime statistics with you by sectors of the city. The department of justice (DOJ) has statitics but they are for past years. You can also after consulting with Boston Police HQ with local precincts (in Boston called districts or areas) to find out more detailed info by talking with the local area HQ as well as the local officers who are on the front lines of everything.

Hope that helps,
