This is a common question we receive from home buyers. While San Jose used to boast being one of the safest large cities in the nation, that has changed. There are hopes that with the new police chief and new hires being added that this will change. What I tell my clients is to view the sites mentioned below, however take a look at other, more affluent communities as well. I live in Almaden, and even our community has its share of crime. Although violent crime is not to be taken lightly, some of these reports may be taken with a grain of salt. No one wants to live in fear, however as Terri mentioned, one of the best gauges is to ask the neighbors in those neighborhoods you are searching for a new home. Also, is there pride in ownership in the area? Are homes being remodeled or do they look run down, and what percentage are rentals? Good luck.

Carl gave you spot on answer. We agents cannot speak to crime. There is a website http://www.CrimeReports.com you can check on.

In addition, I suggest buyers knock on neighbors doors to ask their opinion, visit the local retail stores and ask the employees, and visit the neighborhood at all hours of the day, night, weekends, and plan to test drive your own commute both ways.

This is a tough question for Realtors – while we’d love to be able to give you our opinion, we can’t. Overall, Realtors are prohibited by law from telling you whether or not any specific neighborhood is safe. It’s called “steering” and we are prohibited by our code of ethics and federal law from providing such information. Here are a couple posts that explain more:

NO STEERING ALLOWED: 3 Important Facts To Know As A Buyer

Don’t Get ‘Steered’ in the Wrong Direction

However, we CAN tell you where to go to get information. In your case, for crime statistics, go to the following sites:
