As I answered before.
It's still a problem, but the neighborhood is changing quickly. Big neighborhood blocks blocks going by some really good and some not really. Should check before.
Hope I help
Thx Izzy

I can't say how dangerous Bedford-Stuyvesant is now. I lived there from birth in 1946 until moving to Georgia in 1960. It was a good place to live at that time but things changed a lot since 1960. I was up visiting family on Long Island about ten years ago and we road through the old neighborhood Herkimer St. and Buffalo Ave. and it looked like a war zone. Many houses were gone of boarded up.
We were driving a black rental car, watch punks ducking into doorways as we drove down the street.
My nephew said the car looked like a undercover cop car and that is why they were hiding. I would at that time never let my wife or kids ride through there much less live there. I hope it has changed since the last time I saw it. As for getting robbed or raped or even killed, I think the police do a great job but they can't be with you 24-7 so its up to you to take care of yourself and your family. If New York had a law like many states do, law biding citizens could carry concealed hand guns. This way you would have a fighting chance against the the low life that wants to take your property or your life and if they think you might be armed, they may think twice before trying anything.

I grew up in Bed Stuy and still visit family there regularly. It is undergoing gentrification but is still very much a gritty area. Crime remains an issue although police presence has increased significantly with gentrification. However, drug use and related activity is a daily reality. Being alert and using caution should be exercised when venturing out.

Hi Guns. I know this area quite well as I had grown uo there in the '60's/"70's. Back then it was a tough neighborhood and you learned to watch your back. Fast forward to today and there is renewed interest as there are many beautiful brownstones all throughout the area. I lived on Vernon ave between Stuyvesant and lewis aves. Our parish had a hugh and beautiful gothic styled church which I hope is still standing and servicing the community.

I remember when the original "French connection" movie was filmed there and when the city tore down the elevated train from Myrtle/Broadway to downtown Brooklyn. I remember going to McCaren park in Williamsburg where you didn't want to walk alone and that area has taken off big time and is now a much sought after area to live. Pardon me for waxing nostalgic.

It's always wise to look out for one's family and like everywhere or anywhere, you always have to be careful and mindful of your surroundings and the people who live there. Best to you and your daughter.

Hello, Ms. Brocco below is correct about going to the local police department to find out first hand about the crime situation in that area. If your daughter lease is up soon or if she doesn't have one maybe she could move in another area if she can afford it.

As a woman living alone she needs to place herself in a safer area where there are families and more professional type people or to leave near a collge so she can lessen her risk of crime.

Good luck !

If you are concerned about crime, your best source of information is the local police department--why not visit/call, ask all your questions and hear all there is to hear firsthand, they will gladly help.
