Paul ...

Anna gave you some excellent advice ... it's what I always recommend my buyers to do. More than once, we've walked through an area and knocked on doors to speak with residents ... they're only too glad to share their thoughts. As mentioned, Realtors are not permitted to advise clients whether a location is "safe."

The price of the unit you're looking at is very low. Even in a less favorable real estate climate, $32k isn't going to buy you much. Please get in touch with me, so that we may further discuss your options. I look forward to hearing from you.

When it comes to any safety/crime related issues, it's always best to contact the local police department with all your questions, hear all there is to hear firsthand. If unfamiliar with the area(s) do revisit more than once and at different times of day, possibly chat with locals/neighbors. Real estate professionals are prohibited from steering, enticing a buyer to purchase/rent, or not, in specific neighborhoods.
