Is crime an issue in Park Slope?

Asked by Stephan, San Francisco, CA Mon Apr 23, 2007

How safe is it or does it feel to walk around? And, is this the case across the city, or are there differences in different areas?

Hello Stephan, another good source is the Brooklyn Paper, I hope this helps to answer your question;

Park Slope is a great area - there certainly are differences across the city and its borroughs, just like any city. And the most important thing is to be alert to your surroundings at all time. I do agree that doing your due diligence and you've started with this post, is smart. By all means talk to the police in the area. But Park Slope is very nice, so is Brooklyn Heights and the neighborhoods that stretch down Court Street. I lived in both Park Slope and Carroll Gardens while working in NYC - before we made the move to NJ. If you find yourself branching out to NJ - call me, I can help you here.

I always suggest that people review the Police Blotter section of the local neighborhood paper to see what is going on. Also you may wish to attend local community board meetings.

Another source may be to contact the community offices of the New York City Council, NYS Assembly, NYS Senator covering Park Slope to discuss your questions and concerns regarding crime in the area.

Another suggestion is to speak to residents and business owners to get additional feedback.

I have lived in Park Slope since 1981 and it is a wonderful neighborhood. I have raised my kids here. The architecture is stunning, there is a close neighborhood feel, the schools are great, Prospect Park is an amazing resource for running, biking, playgrounds, concerts and the dog runs. There is every type of shop and restaurant. The Slope was one of the first Brooklyn neighborhoods to revitalize in the late '70s and early '80s after the flight to the suburbs after World War II. It is so established now that people don't realize it was still edgy in those days. After the Slope developed, surrounding neighborhoods in turn developed in a ripple effect.
If you would like help purchasing here I would be happy to work with you.

Questions on area safety are generally best referred to the local police department or the county sheriff's department. They have access to the most current and reliable information and are generally very willing to be helpful.

Good luck

Dear Stephan:

In my opinion crime is not an issue and Park Slope is a very safe neighborhood. It is a very close knit community where everyone looks out for one another. With regard to the rest of the city, for the most part it is very safe and quiet, however, there are some areas here and there that have issues which are usually very apparant if you were to drive or dare I say walk through the area.

If you go to http://www.nyc.gov you can look up the police precincts within the city and then look at the crime statistics on the same web site. Or click on the link below for the pricincts: http://www.nyc.gov/html/nypd/html/precinct_maps/precinct_map…

Once you view the police precinct you can then take a look and compare pricincts crime statistics by clicking on the link below:
http://www.nyc.gov/html/nypd/html/crime_prevention/crime_sta…

If you are looking to purchase a property in Park Slope or any other part of Brooklyn, please contact me. If I can be of further assistance to you, please let me know. Good luck!

It's a lot safer in Park Slope than it use to be, people look out for one another. Also due to the a lot of local bars and restaurants you can also feel safe during any hour of the day to walk the streets. As it is in any area, any where, always use caution, and be aware of your surroundings, until you make friends, know your neighbors, and know who to trust. I was born and raised in Park Slope, and I wouldn't change it for anything in the world.

Hi, Steven answering such a question is a slippery slope for a Real Estate Salesperson since Housing "Steering" is an issue in this country. Not everyone will interpret such an answer as harmless and the risks for the Salesperson of being fined and suspended or revoked are real. Crime statistics in NYC like any other Statistic can be manipulated with "Voodoo Math" so to speak. A current controversy within the five Borroughs is just that: charges and denials of manipulating data by the NYPD to show lower crime statistics. Unfortunately one must get on the ground as the saying goes and see for ones self. I will simply add that I have enjoyed many a late night strolling in the neighborhood after visiting some of my favorite spots in NYC. If you are planning to visit NYC in the future, I'd be happy to show you around the Slope at any hour of the day. My firm happens to be HQ'd in the Slope and we know it very well. I hope this helps.

New York in general is experiencing the lowest crime levels of the last 50 years, so no crime is not an issue. On the other hand, there is a good police presence in this neighborhood.
