Interested in a house in Charlottesville,Va (city of)

Asked by Mona, Chicago, IL Mon Apr 14, 2008

but I can't seem to get a straight answer from anyone as to whether the neighborhood is nice/safe. I can only gauge so much by visiting a day or so, and the police dept can only tell me so much. I want real people the neighborhood dangerous?trashy?going downhill?great? kid friendly? I am not looking to sue anyone, just don't want to drop 700,000 on a house and find out the neighborhood is awful. The neighborhood is Near Jefferson Park ave and stadium, near Emmet? I am not too familiar as I live in Chicago.
Thank you for any advice.

Hi Mona,

I think that the best way to get the "feel" of any neighborhood in any city is to talk to the people that live there. Do you have a friend or co-worker that lives nearby? Is there a neighbor walking their dog when you are out looking at homes? Is there any info in the news or on the local paper online? The internet is also a great source of info (as you know) because people converse freely on blogs and neighborhood schools bulletin boards - another great place to get info. If you are moving from out of town then I would suggest interviewing several buyers agents and pick one that you feel has your best interests at heart (we are out there :-) Finally, I get more of a feel of a neighborhood talking directly with the closest neighbors than any "Realtor scoop" I hear...and of course we all have our opinions.

kind regards,

I am happy to see if I can help, although my ability to answer is limited, ethically. What neighborhood are you speaking of?
