I love S. Austin,TX. But lately I have heard that it is not safe. I think it is eclectic and unusual.

I love South Austin!! People can tend to overly dramatize matters, especially if there is a recent incident. The truth is that you have to be careful at night regardless of where you live. Personally, I feel safe here.

I too have lived in So. Austin for a long time... over 35 years and love it. If you go online you can check the number of police calls in the particular neighborhood that you are interested in. You of course can check the location of sexual preditors there too. I sure feel safer in So.Austin than other areas of North of the river.

Dear Mary Beth,
Having lived in Austin for over twenty years I can say that I feel safe. When I first got here it had a more "small twon" feel to it and I rarely locked my door and often left stuff in the back seat of my unlocked car without thinking twice. Now I might not do that becasue our population has grown tremendously. When that happens the level of crime does seem to rise a bit. However I think Austin is as safe as any other city of this size. If you have concerns check out the crime stats for the neighborhood you are considering and make an informed decision. Good luck!

Safe is a very relative word....crime happens everywhere....you just have to be aware of your surroundings and take precautions...... I used to live in what I'd call a very nice neighborhood in Dallas, but had 3x burglary over the years. I'd always think ...but I live in a nice neighborhood....and the police response would be...exactly...that's why they come to get your stuff. Good neighbors can do lots of things to clean up the neighborhood. Organzie them to work together.... you don't want to be know as the one person contiunally bugging the police to come out. Have different people call to report crime or suspicious persons. Have homeless people sleeping on your doorsteps....power wash the sidewalks at 3am......they'll move on. Play music from speakers all night...add lights.....cameras.....this stuff is cheap now. Be careful out there.

I love south Austin and know several grandmother and single moms that live in safety and comfort in 78704. Besides, its pretty neighborly down there...

I recommend you to show clients looking for a house in 78704 just because you know that region pretty well and have to answer this question all the time.

You can also try http://www.familywatchdog.com to search for convicted sex offenders. South Austin is certainy eclectic and unusual. If you like that area there is nothing else like it in Austin. Every neighborhood is going to vary as far as crime and safety. The best way to get specific information is to go to the city of Austin's website and check out the statistics. Good luck!

Safety is a state of mind. As Realtors we can not tell you what is safe and what is not. That is call steering and is illegal.
You could always check police reports and canvas the neighbors in the area.
Hope this helps.
