I am thinking of renting a place on Portland Street in Phoenix. I am a female and worried about safety in this area. Should I be concerned?

There are a lot of good suggestions on here. I would only follow it up with driving around the area at different times of the day and different days of the week to get a feel for what it feels like, and whether you'd feel comfortable walking down the street alone. Whatever you do, I'd suggest you follow your gut reaction.

Hello Sabangirl, You have probably received the answers regarding safety and where to get specific answers - once you have decided on an area, buying a home would be a great move. Phoenix is one of the most affordable areas in the country. A monthly payment for home is less than rent.

Good afternoon and thanks for the question. Safety is an important concern. There are a few things I suggest to people who I am helping in the downtown area and other areas of Phoenix.

The Phoenix PD has a crime stats web site you can use. It is not the easiest site to navigate so I published a blog post to help: http://www.urbanlifeblog.com/2009/08/how-to-use-the-phoenix-…

I would ask people who live in the area how they feel. I recommend asking a number of people so you get a better pool of information.

If you are talking about Portalnd Street in the downtown area, you may want to check with some of the neighborhood businesses to get their take on crime and safety.

Lastly, learn all you can about how to spot potential criminals and become a more aware person.

Hope this helps a bit.

Hi Sabangirl,

I always suggest to my clients to go online & look at the crime stats in any area of concern. Try this link:

Also, visiting neighborhood restaurants/bars & speaking to the locals that live in the area is also a good sorce of information.

If you have safety concerns, your best source of accurate and up to the minute information are the local authorities, why not call/visit and ask all your questions, hear all there is to hear firsthand.
