When it comes to any safety/crime related issues, it's always best to contact the local police department with all your questions, hear all there is to hear firsthand. If unfamiliar with the area(s) do revisit more than once and at different times of day, possibly chat with locals/neighbors. Real estate professionals are prohibited from steering, enticing a buyer to purchase/rent, or not, in specific neighborhoods.

I live on Eastern Parkway in Prospect Heights and my 12 year old son walks to Grand Army Plaza every day to take the bus to his school at the other end of Park Slope. He's been doing it for over a year, and hasn't had any problems. Of course, he knows to stay on the busier streets and where to go if he is in trouble... It's generally a very safe and community oriented area, where my kids know many of the doormen and shop owners, so they feel secure to move around the neighborhood freely. There is some random mugging and iphone snatching, but that's pretty standard all over the city, and if you are smart you don't put yourself at risk.

Hi Elina,

I would suggest you speak with residents of the desired neighborhood and research local crime statistics (via police department).

Cheers.

Hello Elina Cardet, without a specific address in Prospect Heights it is difficult to accurately report the crime statistics. Depending on the address it could be in the NYPD's 78 Precinct or the 77Precinct. I have included a link to both below. You be the judge if it is safe for a 12 year old or not;

Dear Elina:

That is a very subjective question and the answer can differ from person to person depending on what they consider safe. Do research online and at the local police precinct. Talk to people you know in the area and local business owners. Visit the neighborhood late at night and check out the "lay of the land".

I know some people who would not let their 12 year old walk to school on their own no matter how safe the neighborhood is. It also depends on the maturity of your child.
