How safe is the area around 17th and Howard in St. Joseph?

Asked by Leah Swindler, Saint Joseph, MO Wed Feb 20, 2013

I don't care what other people do, I mind my own business, but I worry about breakins or violent crime directed toward new people in the neighborhood, etc.

When it comes to any safety/crime related issues, it's always best to contact the local police department with all your questions, hear all there is to hear firsthand. If unfamiliar with the area(s) do revisit more than once and at different times of day, possibly chat with locals/neighbors. Real estate professionals are prohibited from steering, enticing a buyer to purchase/rent, or not, in specific neighborhoods.

Its not a place I would live. There are some beautiful old houses in that area but also a lot of low income rental properties. Its a very poor part of town and break ins are pretty common. I would contact the police department for more info. As a St. Joe native I have always thought the area was pretty sketchy but have never lived there myself. If you want a safer, more family friendly zone I would look South of Frederick avenue and no street lower than 22nd.

It is not fair to label streets "lower than 22nd" as bad areas. We live in a historic district near 12th street, although it IS south of Frederick (if that makes any difference). Not all neighborhoods are alike. We have lived in our neighborhood for 23 years. Lots of local people think the neighborhood is unsafe, but that is a local misperception. We have had no problems here that you don't have anywhere else. We love our neighborhood. It is diverse, is not "cookie-cutter", and has lots of lovely old homes, many of which have been beautifully restored. That being said, the area around 17th and Howard is not as far along with preservation than some neighborhoods. Please don't stereotype areas west of 22nd Street.

Eh, it's not the best neighborhood. I have a friend who lives a few blocks away and theft is a problem.
