North of Rinaldi, is just about the same as South of the Ventura Blvd.
Check out a neighborhood, back alleys if there is no Graffiti, I recommend the area.
The hills are always very attractive, since the temperatures differ in the SFV from 10 to 15 Degree Fahrenheit and make the living so much more comfortable
I have sold a few homes in the Granada Hills area and my Clients are very happy.

Granada Hills in general is a very nice neighborhood...however, North of Rinaldi and West of Balboa are the prime, higher income areas. As far as "safe" get the best and the worst in any area..but it is definately safer than some of the lower income areas surrounding this neighborhood. If you are interested in finding out this information because of schools for assured...Granada Hills High School is amongst the elite for public schools, as well as Frost Middle School. Let me know if I can provide any further information for you...

I've lived in the flats of GH for 12 years (between San Fernando Mission Blvd. and Chatsworth St), and GH north (Knollwood area) for 4. By FAR, GH north is much safer all the way around. We have had zero instances of anything slightly untoward since moving north of Rinaldi, while living in the flats it was one thing after another from graffiti to grand theft auto to burglary. My advice to someone looking to move to GH, is to do your best to get in north of Rinaldi - as far north of it as possible. Don't rent or buy on main streets (easy access for those looking for an easy mark), and still stay aware regardless. Get to know your neighbors - they can be your best friends in watching out for your property when you are away from home.

Granada Hills is really about the same as most of the SFV, you have all types in every neighborhood, the good, the bad, and the druggies. It does not really matter the name of the area, San Fernando has had a very bad reputation but amazingly is now one of the nicest areas in the valley especially the east side, and with one hell of a police department and CODE ENFORCEMENT. Sylmar up towards the hillside is very nice, listen Armine I don't care if you live in Encino or Santa Clarita there's burglaries and gangs there too, different areas just different types.

My best advice as a SFV life long resident, not many neighborhoods are "perfect" thieves tend to eyeball better areas for better product, drive around the area check out the maintenance of the homes and the yards, you'll get a good Idea.

In general I love the SFV, I've been all over in thousands of homes like every huge city there are some areas to stay clear of, there the ones that every home on the street have window bars, but I thing Granada Hills is A-OK.

Issues of neighborhood safety are often best directed to the local police department. They have access to the most reliable information and are generlly willing to be helpful.
