Marc. You are correct, there was a death at the Lofts at Lakeview last week. Not much has been said, however, the police at the scene indicated it looked like an "accidental" death and confirmed it only involved one individual.
If you are thinking of buying, you might want to check out http://www.pavilioneastlofts.com which is also at Lakeview and you can buy a luxury condo and walk to West Campus. This is the only ownership possibility anywhere within walking distance to West Campus and Medical Center at Duke that will build any equity. Other areas around Duke at East Campus in the Trinity area are nice as well and again, that area is relatively safe also, though some of the choices there are deed restricted for "Duke" people.
Have fun house hunting!

Marc,
I am not a realtor (I'm a CPA). I've lived in that area of Durham for 15 years. The area in around Duke typically doesn't have serious crimes (primarily the normal stuff like property crimes). The murder you may be referring to was probably was of a Duke grad student. The same two killers murdered the Student Body President at UNC in Chapel Hill (Eve Carson) It was a random act of violence that gained national attention because it is such a rare thing for that kind of crime to occur near Duke or UNC. Here is a link to the story of their arrest. http://www.wral.com/news/local/story/2569358/ I wouldn't let that affect my decision about where to live.

I have two friends who live at the Lofts (a venture capitalist and a start-up software company president). They both love it and have been there about a year. As an alternative, you may want to look around Croasdaile Country Club area. It is one mile north of Duke Hospital. If you want to rent, one of the best places would be Woodstone Apartments in Croasdaile. See this link: http://www.gardenviewrealty.com/WOODSTONE/. If you want to purchase a townhouse there is one for sale that overlooks the golf course for $189K. http://www.hpw.com/SearchPages/Detail.aspx?MLS=Triangle&…
Good luck on your move and welcome to Durham.
