Yes. There are several children involved in gang activity, mostly provoked by thier parents and peers. "Crips" are the leading gang. They wear all blue most of the time and/ or have a blue bandana stuck in a back pocket which they tuck away when they see an adult. It is well known throughout the school by students of their presence. There is also a gang that call themselves "The Sick Ones"...also well known by students as a gang that tags the surrounding areas and target certain children to beat up based by requests from other students who don't seem to able able to fight thier own battles.
Walker seems to turn a blind eye to bullying and do little to no follow up to see if these incidents are possibly gang related. It has been like this for many, many years. If you are concerned for your childs safety remove them and research the available schools incidents with Orange County Sheriffs Department. Fights usually occur off campus, thereby allowing the school to take zero accountability. In a depressed, sick community such as ours. There really is no solution. If you care enough....move far away.

If you call the police or sheriff's office and ask for the gang unit, they will be able to tell you. Most likely they will also tell you which gangs and what to look for as a sign that there are gangs in the area. They will also ask that you report any of the signs you see to them to help them better investigate the area.

Since you are asking a question specific to a school, it is our recommendation to be in touch with the local police department and request to speak with one of their "juvenille officers." They will have access to the information you are seeking.

Hi Amanda -- The best way to check on the safety of any school would be to ask the local police department--in this case, the Orlando Police Department.

There are websites that give you crime stats for the area, but it doesn't break the data out for just the schools.

Of course you could go to the school and ask questions, and physically check it out for yourself. I know I've always personally visited any school my children would attend prior to making a decision on what house to buy. Here is the website with information on Walker Middle:

Also, you could try to get information from the Florida Department of Education. They used to publish the "School Crime and Violence Report" which outlined the number and types of incidents that occurred at all the schools, but I couldn't find it on the website. Maybe they stopped doing it.

Good luck. I applaud you for checking things out before you enroll your kids.
