As a parent of a former Benito student (attended 6th grade only), I as a parent have mixed reviews as well as my daughter. First off, allow me to comment that the area in which the school is located, New Tampa, is not what it once was. We first moved to the New Tampa area in 1999 and saw it experience abundant growth which was positive to have more than a walmart and Publix, however, this growth brought apartment complexes, which are not bad in their very essence, they just allowed a type of people to permeate the area that previously would have been unable to, again this is both positive and negative. But the old adage holds true "one bad apple spoils the bunch" and I'm afraid this is the current state of New Tampa. I believe the people that have stayed are basically stuck there by their dwindling property value, through no fault of their own, however this problem is exacerbated by the communities, Cory Lake Isle being a main culprit, allowing multi- families to rent one home and not enfacing upkeep( horrendous overgrown dead lawns, 5+cars that are belonging to a 4 bedroom house, etc. Believe me, we once owned there, Java Isle, and I thank my lucky stars for being able to escape. Now to answer your question. I hope the community now paints a picture of the school. It is a cultural melting pot, which is very enriching to be educated in of course drawbacks are included... A pregnant 6th grader( it's her 2 child!) girls allowed to wear highly inappropriate attire such as skin tight dresses and believe me I'm in no way a prude. This shows the parenting of these children so you can imagine the overall tone of the school. The education is average with again average teachers and slightly higher if your child is in the "gifted program". I could go on but won't only to leave you with if you can live in another area, do so! ... more
