You need to go to or for short term rentals. Trulia, Zillow and others are for permanent residential listings only.

Be aware that scams do exist; be mindful that such web sites are third party sites, so the information is fed by various sources, therefore data is not really verified. If you choose not to work with an agent of your own always verify ownership before exchanging any money/personal information--make certain they are who they claim to be. Never wire any money, if it sounds too good to be true, it is. For scam related information see link.

There are several houses for sale in the Camelot area opposite NGIC that have not been moving very fast. You could contact the seller to see if they would be interested in leasing or lease-to-own. Camelot's not an exciting neighborhood, but it's really close to NGIC, and while the homes are older they are for the most part well-maintained. The prices are lower that those closer to charlottesville, and you could certainly find a place for well under $1500.

Yes, do look at craigslist and zillow, but consider the regular MLS sales list too and think of creative offers.

Consider a rent-to own with some of the rent deferred for improvements or maintenance. There have been many foreclosures sold in the past several months, and many of these buyers would love to sell there properties. The problem is that banks have gotten very finicky about lenders lately. Rent-to-own might be a great way to get this started.

Maybe you two should get married too, you sound very compatible. ;=)

Yes, we're listing a 1 BR apartment for $625 on Stribling Ave that is in recently renovated space and includes water. Looking around it seems that there are several others at this price or slightly higher.

I'd pay close attention to what kind of amenities come with the rent. Heat, water, trash, and internet will add up and some apartments will provide this with the apartment and others (like ours) mainly do not.

Good luck!
