Hi Victoria,

You can list your apartment for rent in several ways...

1. Hire a local Realtor. Depending on the agent you use, they will generally put the home in MLS for other agents to see, place signage on the property, recommend a rent price that is in-line with the market, and give you advice for how to best position your apartment for renting. Depending on the Brokerage you hire, they generally charge the 1st month's rent as compensation. This rent is used to cover the cost of screening applicants and paying the commission to the agents involved in the transaction. The Brokerage you hire might also offer Property Management services so you don't have to worry about maintenance calls or collecting rent.

2. Use local For Rent websites that cater to your area. FRBO.COM (for rent by owner) is one of many examples. You can also use sites like Trulia and Zillow to post For Rents.

3. Stick a sign in the yard! You'd be surprised how many leads come from a simple drive-by.

Carol Lin's answer was very good. I'd only like to add a few points...

In addition to contacting a Bank regarding your pre-approval, I'd recommend contacting a Loan Broker as well. Loan Broker's are able to shop your specific financing needs around to the various institutions offering financing to find the best fit for you. A local Realtor should be able to recommend a reputable company they have worked with.

Also, when deciding what type of home you're looking for, keep in-mind the cost of maintenance and repairs. A home with multiple water heaters or A/C units will cost significantly more in monthly expenses than a home with less equipment. Be sure to consider the age of these mechanics as well as the age and condition of the roof. These items are typically your biggest repair expenses.

It doesn't hurt to ask for (or buy for yourself) a home warranty that will cover the repair or replacement cost for aging items.
