You have multiple options when selling... three of those are:
1) List it yourself For Sale By Owner = NO MLS#
a) Hire an FSBO company to put a sign in and put on their website
b) buy your own sign from the hardware store, run ads in the paper, etc.

2) List with a "Limited Service" Broker (sometimes known as FLAT FEE) = MLS#
They do what their name implies... Limited service to you (their limited client), you still need to sign a listing contract with that broker, agree to pay a commission to that broker if they or any REALTOR brings you a buyer (that successfully closes). You still may be able to source your own buyer in this scenario as well. You will also somehow compensate the listing broker for listing your home... sometimes it is a flat-fee, sometimes a commission amount. They will explain what services that they are not providing to you that you would be owed (and pay for) in a traditional listing.

3) List with a FULL-SERVICE brokerage = MLS# and who is legally bound to negotiate for you, put your interests first, help you price and market to get your home sold in your timeframe and for a fair price. You will have a higher commission in this scenario...
Depending on your ability and/or desire to market, negotiate, deal with order title, negotiate inspection issues, hold open houses, be there to answer calls for showings, show the house... You may see the value of hiring the right agent with the right plan, heck... you may even be able to negotiate a better selling price/terms... who knows?

People do go the limited service route and do it successfully!

If you ultimately choose to go limited service to get the exposure of the Multiple Listing Service and an MLS#, choose the Limited Service broker carefully as you would a full service one...
A few items that I would do:
Look at their current listings.
Talk to someone who has sold through them.
Check the Department of Reg and Licensing website.
Ask if they can put together a market analysis (CMA) for you and help you set the price.
