In my personal opinion vinyl siding is trash. Your original wood shakes will dry rot and the siding nails will not hold in high winds. Pick up a rock with your lawn mower or toss a ball with your,children,and damage the siding; you'll never match it. The sun fades it so even if you have saved some from the original install, it will not match. The other thing I dislike about vinyl is the "chimney,effect" in case of fire. Not as bad as with aluminum siding but still a factor. The fire burns the dry rotted wood like kindling and races up the side of the house sometimes blocking escape through windows. If you can possibly afford to replace your original shakes with shingles or clapboard the value or your home should INCREASE! Go with wood! This is New England after all........ ... more
