Hi Kevin, my husband and I made a similar transition to the one you are considering about 15 years ago (ouch! - hard to believe its been so long!). We ended up in Warren (Somerset County) which lies between exits 36 and 33 on 78 and decided on a neighborhood close to the highway which made access to the highway terrific. My husband continues to commute into the city everyday - and generally chooses to use 78 to be "in control" of his commute. Neighboring communities include Watchung - just to our east, Basking Ridge, Bernardsville,Green Brook, Long Hill (Morris County). You'd be in good shape from any of these commuting wise. You've got great access to highways and trains, and buses. You'll find most price points in all of these communities - primarily single family homes but also townhomes in several of them as well.

A little further out and you come to Bridgewater - commute will be longer, prices will be lower. There is one section of Bridgewater that lies right on the Warren border - Martinsville - you'll find some new-er townhomes, but the homes will be older. Near the Bridgewater mall are new-er homes, but the living is pretty dense - quarter acre lots or less are quite common.

Your money will buy you more for sure as you head west, but you'll be adding to your commute. I just sold a couple that started their search in Bridgewater a home in Clinton - their search evolved and they ultimately liked the larger home and larger lot they were able to buy in Clinton. But for them, the commute worked, because they only had to get as far as Warren to work. Just did some looking with a couple in Pittstown - yes, a more rural feel. Not so with Hillsborough, it is more dense. Branchburg is just past Bridgewater - feeds into Somerville High School.

Although your children are young, schools will likely figure into your decision-making - you can find school info at my website www.feenick.com - just click on the School Info link. I find that many buyers I work with like to create a spread sheet to organize their thoughts/priorities - may help as you frame your search - obvious categories - Commute, Schools, Price, Home Features....

I'm familiar with all of these area - it is not uncommon for buyers to move through the communities along the 78 corridor as they pull their search into focus. It's a journey I've taken often and one I'd be honored to accompany you on. You can find me - and search freely all listings on the Garden State MLS - at my website www.feenick.com You can also reach me easily via Trulia.

Best,

Hi Ellen, hope to answer your inquery.............I am guessing that the 40 minutes you mentioned, from Basking Ridge/Bernardsville may be your place of business?..........there are wonderful communites that you would love well within 40 minutes and they all have their "speical" town functions...........besides the 2 mentioned, you can investigate Bedminster, Readington and much more........I would suggest keeping you close to the 287/78 corridor which the above towns mentioned are if I am correct in your job's position.............I work in all areas as well as reside in Bedminster........depending on what you are looking for in a townhouse would depend on which areas may interest you.......The Hills in Bedminster for example have great ammenities such as pool, tennis, full gym, biking and jogging paths as well as a golf course...........please let me know if I can be of further assisstance

What age range are you looking to mingle with? Do you want a DJ or would you prefer live music? If you can be more specific, I would be happy to make a suggestion.
