Hi Ryan,

You will want to mitigate your risk as much as possible. Renting a property can be a great investment, but only if you streamline your process and reduce the chance of miscommunications and issues with tenants. Here are some posts to read that may be helpful:

Hello,

We’re excited you’re using Trulia for your home search process. We are a real estate search engine so we don't represent the homes found on our site. Please follow these steps to begin your home search:

1. Click the "Rent' tab at the top of our homepage.
2. Enter your desired city and state in the search bar and hit Enter.
3. Click 'Max Price' to select what your highest price would be to pay for a home. Click 'Min Price' to set the lowest price you would pay.
4. Click 'More Filters'.
5. Select your preferred property type, square footage, etc.
6. Click the red 'Apply' button.

This will begin to pull up listings that are more tailored to what you are looking for.

If you are interested in a listing, click on the "Contact the agent" button to get in touch with a real estate professional in your area. You can also take advantage of our vast network of agents here:

We hope your experience with Trulia is memorable and thank you for using Trulia for all your real estate needs.

Steiner Ranch and all the areas around it are way above the price range you mentioned. $1400 barely gets you any home in the greater Austin area, maybe a 2/2 condo. If you can either change location or pay higher rent, I would be happy to help.

Mike, That is a tough situation. You should consider purchasing a home with owner financing. The qualifications for owner finance properties are a lot more relaxed when compared to renting. If you don't have a big bag of cash sitting around for the down payment your options are going to be very limited, BUT many management companies will consider you more seriously if you mention you can pay several months of rent up front. Best of luck. ... more

I'm not sure how much these usually cost. An alarm system will definitely up the price a bit. You will want to ask someone about this and see what the exact price will be so that you can plan accordingly. http://privateeyesnj.com/Alarm-Systems-Ocean-View-NJ.html ... more

Understand that ANYONE can post a rental. Trulia is only displaying 3rd party info, and there are ways for scammers to post fake listings on other websites which then get mirrored on trulia, zillow, realtor, etx.. When a deal seems too good to be true, it is.. ALWAYS verify EVERYTHING you see online with a local Realtor. Realtors adhere to a strict code of ethics which offers you consumer protection and piece of mind. Flag the listings and email fraud@trulia.com Browse the agent directory to find a well reviewed local Realtor. ... more
