There are several great suggestions here and it sounds like you are doing many of them already - good for you! Have you seen the eviction record on your report? I'm curious because often times old records don't (or shouldn't) show up on a tenant screening report. Many states have laws in place that prohibit screening companies from reporting information that antedates 7 years. This of course is not always the case, and I am not certain of the laws in IL.

I would suggest you ask to see a copy of your report - if your application has been declined you should have been issued a notice of adverse action that explains why you were declined and who to contact for a copy of your FREE report. You can also go to a tenant screening website called MyScreeningReport.com and order your own tenant screening report then share it with multiple landlords at no additional cost for 30 days. The advantage to this is that you can see ahead of time what is on the report that you will be presenting to your prospective landlord. Additionally, doesn't negatively affect your credit score because YOU are the one that is ordering it.

Best of luck to you!

The prices posted here by RealtyTrac are not list prices. When a home goes to auction they are posted by the bank holding the note and typically have a minimum bid that must be reached to do business.
Most of the foreclosures listed here never make it to auction and when/if they do, the price will be something other than what you see here. RealtyTrac sells subscriptions for information you can get for free from a great local agent.

Hi Adonis,

Congrats on the decision to buy a home! The conventional first step is to get a prequalification letter, which basically provides an opinion on the home price and loan you can expect to qualify for. Lenders and brokers all will be able to get you prequalified without a problem. Use that opinion to hunt for a home while you start shopping around for mortgage loans.

Seeing as your just getting started, you might want to check out MortgageHippo.com: an online tool that helps you choose the right mortgage based on your needs and preferences.

It's optimized for first-time homebuyers who might not know where to start and need a little guidance along the way.

Here's how it works:

1. Answer a series of simple questions to determine your personal needs, preferences, and risk tolerance, and MortgageHippo will recommend the best mortgages that fit your profile.

2. Shop and compare recommended loan offers from lenders, completely anonymously.

3. Once you find a loan you like and want to proceed, you'll have access to your very own advanced closing plan, where you can see the whole process at a glance, keep track of your application, and sign off on key documents -- all with the help of a personal mortgage expert.

You can sign up for free and see personalized loan results in about 10 min. All you need is your email to get going.

If you're comfortable using online services like TurboTax and Mint.com and looking to buy, check it out!

Full disclosure: I'm a product designer at MortgageHippo

Hello Monika,

First, you should get a bank pre-approval letter (which I can help you with) so you know what you are capable of buying.
Second, you want to determine your favorite neighborhoods and/or school districts.
Third, find an experienced broker (like myself) who can line up tours of the homes that fit what you are looking for.

Finding a home can be a fun experience especially if you follow the steps above. Just let me know if you would like my help. Thanks, John
