For me, time did not run out. I DID ask the probing questions. I DID NOT accept the token responses. Because of the position of honor in which I placed my parents, it was important for me to understand not only the why but the how of their enduring relationship and the unity with which they raised a family.
Two things stand out with exceptional clarity.
Regarding work: it is always our choice how we react.
Regarding family: When you choose to procreate, it is a 20 year commitment. Nothing else matters.
As a result of wanting to know, three pages of 'What I Have Learned' are shared one morsel at a time. By sharing these priceless principles of living my parents shared with me, they achieve immortality. They continue to live in the words 'You choose how you react," and 'Nothing else matters."
As time sharpened my insight, I came to understand, happiness was not their destination, but was a byproduct of the clarity of their greater purpose.
Don't let time run out. Turn towards with sentences beginning with, "What was it like for you........"
