have you had your for sale listing get post on Craigs list for rent?

Asked by Debby Thompson, Wauwatosa, WI Thu Oct 14, 2010

I have been getting calls for 2 days on a property I have for sale that is now showing up on Criag's list for rent. They are trying to get the people to send them money. I have tried for 2 days to contact Craigs list to get it off. Anyone have luck with Craig's list getting these listings off? Does anyone have a phone number for them.

The off shore scammer sets up an email account, usually Yahoo, with the name of the owner, but reverses the names. He gets the info from the listing on MLS or realtor.com. He posts on craigslist, an absurd rental price. When locals drive by and see your For Sale sign, they call you. When you look on craigslist for the source of the rental offering, it is down already. A few days later they do it again. If victim communicates with scammer, they have a tale leading to "I'll send you the keys, trusting you." Of course, next is, "Since I trusted you, please send me $500 deposit." My impression is nothing can be done to stop scammer. But we should all be careful with what we say about listing a house and then the possibility of scammers. We don;t want to suggest any risk from listing and using the internet to market. As long as it involves a phone call to us inquiring about an unusual "ad on craigslist for a rental", we should simply say, "it is listed for sale, not for rent." IMHO of course.

Everyone seems to go through this, and not just with postings on craigslist. I've also had people call me after seeing the ad on Yahoo.

Ask the person who called you about the "rental" to send you a copy of the post, and then and forward to craigslist

Indicate that it's spam/scam

Regardless of the spam/scam, I've received very good results and good exposure ---- so I continue to use it. Even social media gurus recommend it. Don't forget to post your listings on Facebook, too!

Yes you just flag it and they pull it immediately. I have had this happen numerous times.

I stopped post my listings on Craig's list because this did happen to me last year also. They are pulling this from some where else. I don't know where it is coming from. I think I am going to start coding my on line listings so I can pin point where this is coming from. So I know now it is not from a posting on craigs list.
Good idea to warn the sellers. I am going to do that from now on. Thanks

Debby - I have heard of this around my area a few months ago. I stopped utilizing Craigslist to post my listings because of all the peripheral solicitations that I receive with each posting. For me, it is not worth the free advertisement. I wish you the best in resolving this issue.

Hello Debbie, try their Legal Dept. you can navigate there through their website, and keep flagging the aduntil it is removed. This is an ongoing problem many of us have experienced. We now warn our client's that this may occur when we list homes.
