Refer to your subdivisions protective covenants. It more than likely is in there. If not check with planning and zoning.

Contact your Building Department. There is also a max height it can be...the farther away the higher it can be.

There are two factors that determine the distance: zoning and easement. Even if zoning information says there is a 10 foot setback from your property line for structures and fences, that isn't the complete answer. Almost all properties located on public streets also have an easement that allows the city to build sidewalks along the street - on your property - or to enter your property to facilitate street maintenance. In many towns that easement extends 6 to 10 feet into your property for the entire length of your property line that is along the street.
You need to check with the city where the property is located to determine how they document both the zoning and easements (if any). In the last year I sold a home that had setback and easement information on the zoning diagram (plat map), then I sold a home in an adjacent town where the city's easement was documented separately from the zoning information.

This varies by city, county and covenants. In our area it is usually 25 ft but I have seen some subdivisions enforce 40 feet. I would look to see what your county or city set back is then look in the covenenats of a particular subdivision to see if the have increased that distance.
